Bunkhouse Privacy Curtains

On March 16, 2016 by Jay McCormick

Since our kids continually tell us that they are “almost teenagers” (they’re 11 and 9) we decided to do them a huge favor and implement some privacy for each of their respective areas in the bunkhouse.   Our true motivation for doing this mod was to cover and control the perpetual “pre-teen” chaos and clutter.  Plus, we thought it would look cool.

It’s a simple project that took a total of no  more than half an hour of work to complete.  I did have to make a trip to Lowe’s and to the RV storage facility.  So, the total time I invested was about an hour and a half.

Supplies

  1. Shower rod (ordered from Amazon) – I went with an expandable tension rod because I refuse to pierce the walls of the RV.  I may want to upgrade one day.  Make sure the rod can expand to accommodate the distance between the walls used.
  2. Shower curtains (ordered from Amazon) – The choices are infinite.  We wanted an animal/outdoors theme and once we narrowed the categories we let the kids choose the curtain each one wanted.  Luke chose the bear and Ireland chose the deer.
  3. Shower rod hooks (ordered from Amazon) – The curtains came with hooks, but we “upgraded” stainless steel hooks.
  4. Spray paint (purchased from Lowe’s) – See #5.
  5. A 2 ft piece of 1X4 (purchased from Lowe’s) – I used the pieces of 1×4 to provide additional support for the rod.  If you RV is like mine the walls have some flex in them and a tension rod could fall while in transit.  I cut the IMG_3594piece into 4 equal squares to and drilled a 1 1/4 inch wide hole through the center of each piece.  I then painted them a dark brown to match, as close as possible, the
    other trim in the bunkhouse.

Tools

  1. Drill
  2. 1 1/4 inch spade bit (you could use a hole saw bit as well)
  3. Circular or table saw
  4. Sandpaper
  5. 3M Command strips (may be the best “tool” for RVers)

Steps

  1. Cut the 1×4 into 4 squares of equal size.
  2. Cut a hole in the center of each piece of 1×4.
  3. Sand each piece of 1/4.
  4. Paint each peice of 1×4 with the paint selected in Supplies #4.
  5. In the area in the RV where you want to hang the shower rod, expand the rod then mark the spot on each wall where the  center of end of the rod touches.
  6. Using mark made in step #5 and the command strips (I used two on each square) hang a square piece of 1×4 on each wall using the mark as a center point.
  7. Expand and tension the rod through the holes in the 1/4 squares.
  8. Hang the curtain.
  9. Pat yourself on the back and show off your completed project including blogging about it.
