Jay vs. The Clogged RV Toilet
On January 14, 2016 by Jay McCormickSince my kids (it’s never my fault) decide to use at least 7 trees worth of toilet paper each time they visit the RV “library” I inevitably hear “Jay, the toilet’s clogged again” at least one time during each outing. So, needless to say I’ve become an expert on the art of unclogging the RV toilet. Here is my game plan each time I go to the mat with the porcelain throne:
- Turn the water off. If you’re connected to park/city water then turn it off at the spigot. If you’re using your freshwater tank, make sure the water pump is off.
- Open the bathroom sink faucet to make sure you get as much water out of the lines going to the bathroom as possible.
- Boil water. I use my hot water kettle (I think it holds a liter and half or so).
- Once you have the water boiling press the pedal to open the toilet flap.
- Hold the boiling water close the toilet so it doesn’t splatter on you when you pour.
- Pour the water into the toilet keeping the flap open so that the water enters the pipes and does its magic. Don’t worry…you’re not going to melt anything.
- If this first round of H2O doesn’t quite get the job done I will boil and pour another kettle full in.
Sometimes it takes a few minutes to breakup the nastiness. There have been a few times that some additional encouragement is needed. When this happens I use my scrap piece of garden hose (about 5 feet long). I run the garden hose down into the pipe and push.
So far…..Jay 16 Toilet 0
Note: I will continue to educate my kids that they don’t need to kill so many trees to effectively clean their bums.
